Nexus filtration
Pinned Answeredhello does anyone know how to protect the pump when using a gravity fed system and external pump. I am using the Nexxus 320 and EA 30000 pump and am concerned about my pump running dry because I haven't been able to clean it soon enough. At the moment I am having to clean my filter every day I guess due to the sun, heat and algae. I don't have Koi, but have instead wild carp and goldfish only. My pond is 32000 litres.

Hello Grimwell2812. Essentially in a gravity fed situation, the pump is positioned immediately after the Nexus, and as such has a constant ‘flooded’ connection.
As the Nexus has an overflow/bypass built into the filter, if the central ‘Eazy’ should get blocked with waste, the filter will overflow and keep the flooded connection.
It may be possible that in this situation the pump will get blanketweed in the impellor that will potentially impact the performance of the pump, but this would really only happen if the filter was allowed to go far too long between cleans. -
I totally get the idea of the system but the issue is that because the water is less able to enter the filter system due to it doing its job and catching the debris, the water in the pond rises and then runs out of the overflow into my second pond that serves as a catchment but is not connected to the main pond in any other way. It has its own pump and filter. If it didn't overflow there it would overflow at the next place which would be my skimmer. So as my water level decreases there is less water going into the filter and the level is dropping more and more. I am having to clean the filter every other day and i don't have blanketweed and never have. I assume it is all algae and fish waste. So not only am I having to clean every other day but I am also having to replace the water lost over the overflow so just under 200 litres for just the filter turns into 400 and 600 litres average every time. I get it that the filter does its job but that kind of water top up has put my water bill three times what it was before I installed the nexxus and because so much water is replaced the water obviously also dilutes any debris anyway. If anyone can give me a solution to this amount of water being used, I would be very grateful or is it simply the reason why so many second hand nexxus filters are for sale?
