The Surge Filter
Pinned AnsweredHi
Really feel I want to voice a gripe about the Surge. I'm a long term Koi keeper and a huge fan of all things Evolution aqua, Main pond still runs on an old Nexus 300 and that's your fault. Every time I thin k of an upgrade. I cant do it because the older tech still works so well. I am with EA as my first choice for everything I search for. My first little moan was on the Tempest. I use one after my skimmer line and love the overall product its simple and works so well. Revolutionised the simplicity of the line in my pond. I had 2 small gripes. The mounting brackets and the fact that I cant easily access the inside of the media But that said ,still love that unit and would recommend to anyone.
After a visit to my dealer I decided to pick up another Tempest for a grow on set up but was advised to take the Surge instead. On his word and the fact that I was short on time, I took this at face value and purchased one. Out of the box I note much better mounts and valves and a black casing so looks amazing. It has a small built it UV which is of no use what so ever as I already have my main EV 55 unit on main filter. Using the Surge is driving me crazy. Why is it black with no way of seeing how clean it is after flushing. With the Tempest I sometimes flush once but sometimes flush several time until i am happy with the clean. I can tell as some times you can see that under heavy summer loads the media can clog so more rinses are required. With the Surge I have to Guess. I have used the unit for couple of month now without putting a plug on the useless UV, but it has to go. I sorry but not knowing how clean it is after flushing is driving me insane It must be the only koi filter on the market where you have no way of being sure is no remaining dirt inside after cleaning. I feel really strongly about this to the point I think it has altered my opinion on the dealer who sold it to me. It has to go but I will probably get another Tempest as I do like the way they work for me { as long as you haven't made it black}.
Can I suggest an improvement
Better mounts and valves great but make both products clear so we know how well we have cleaned them. If people moan about algae maybe a black zip vest could be an available extra.
Also make both units accessible with a clip off top like the ones on pressure filters. then we could open and sterilise media in periods of no use or end of season

Regarding the Surge, we completely understand your concerns. The clear PVC waste pipe is designed to indicate when the water runs clear during flushing. The black body helps prevent algae growth inside the vessel, which is particularly important for an all-in-one filter unit like the Surge, compared to the Tempest, which functions as a polisher.Your suggestions — including clearer housings, zip vests, and removable tops — are appreciated and will be shared with our product development team. We always aim to balance innovation and value, and input like yours plays an important part in that process.
Thanks again for taking the time to reach out and help us improve.
Best regards,
